WORKSHOP AND LECTURE

Biodiversity in the Densifying City

2022

In collaboration with Bryggman-instituutti / Turku, Finland

The event tackled balancing biodiversity in densifying cities through an afternoon of lectures following a workshop. The public workshop gathered municipal decision makers, planners, architects and students, as well as active citizens.

Lectures were held by PhD, post-doctoral researcher Joel Jalkanen from the University of Helsinki, and Vapaa Collective’s Iines Karkulahti and Charlotte Nyholm. In the workshop the participants solved the challenges of biodiversity in different contexts, using f.ex. Itäharju and Pansio neighbourhoods of Turku as examples. The workshop discussed solutions between the highly optimized planning regulations and the uncertainties of natural processes.

As a result, thought-provoking ideas were presented on the topics of rooftop-seedling gardens, year of non-construction, neighbourhood bee -culture and the required societal shift.
